ELIZABETH 1 (1553 - 1603)

Daughter of Henry V111 and his second wife Ane Boleyn, she was the last of the Tudor rulers of England.  Her ligitimacy was questioned but never settled.

Born in London on September 7 1533, she spent most of her childhood away from court, she had an excellent classical education.  Catherine Parr brought Elizabeth back to court where she remained after Henry V111's death.  In 1554 Elizabeth was imprisoned on a false charge of treason.

Elizabeth's most famous advisers were Sir Francis Walsingham and William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley.  Her admiral was Sir Francis Drake who defeated Spain in 1588.  Elizabeth's favourites at court were Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester, Sir Walter Raleigh and Robert Devereux 2nd Earl of Essex, who was executed for treason in 1601.
